Reflection/Summary
The measurement, choose your tools lesson is one of my favorite lessons to teach because it is so fun and engaging for my students. It incorporates hands-on activities and the use of physical and technological tools to help students more effectively visualize the concept of measuring with the proper tools and interactive technology components that give students practice troubleshooting and applying what they know to a technological resource. The students understood digital citizenship and the importance of our online actions, which have consequences and a forever digital footprint.
Allowing my students to use a visual and auditory source to watch the YouTube video on choosing the correct tool to measure gave them a better idea of what to expect when applying the tools within the lesson. The students enjoyed using the measuring tape app to check their physical measurements with rulers and a yardstick. I used IXL Math to check their understanding and ensure each student fully understood the lesson. IXL Math promotes rigor by helping students develop a conceptual understanding of math, build procedural fluency, and apply real-world applications.
Overall, my students enjoyed the lesson as much as I did. They were engaged and could meet the lesson's objectives with minimal difficulties. If an error occurred or a student showed signs of struggle, their peers and I provided extra support as guidance to move along. I will continue to teach this lesson with additional revisions as technology changes.
